The kim jong un coin is the meme market's dark joke about the Binance hack. Hours after the FBI said North Korea's TraderTraitor unit stole the funds, a Solana token with the ticker KIM became one of the most traded memecoins of the night. At our DEX Screener check at 06:01 UTC on November 1 (09:01 MSK), its main pump.fun pool showed about $5.9 million in 24-hour volume on a market cap near $241,000.

What actually happened

On Saturday, the FBI attributed the roughly $6.3 billion Binance theft to TraderTraitor, a North Korean state-backed group that CNA describes as linked to the wider Lazarus Group. Crypto Twitter reacted the way it usually does. Bitcoin.com News reported a flood of edited images showing Kim Jong Un celebrating an imaginary payday, congratulating the hacker and joking about a $6 billion boost to North Korea's GDP.

Traders turned the joke into tickers. DEX Screener lists the main Solana KIM pool on PumpSwap as created at 21:02 UTC on October 31, shortly after the attribution news spread. A Robinhood Chain token with the same name had launched a few hours earlier and was up more than 1,600% at our check, with about $2 million of volume. Two more KIM contracts were trading on Arc with market caps around $25,000.

The wave was bigger than one coin. sasa's November 1 Solana board listed several separate KIM launches with the same name among the day's busiest new pools, plus tokens named TraderTraitor and "Democratic Republic of Binance" among the top gainers.

The numbers behind the kim jong un coin

At our check, the main Solana pool showed:

  • Market cap: about $241,000
  • 24-hour volume: about $5.9 million
  • Liquidity: about $48,500
  • 24-hour change: about +490%

That ratio is the story. Daily volume was more than 20 times the market cap and more than 100 times the pool's liquidity. When the same coins change hands that many times, bots and fast snipers are usually doing most of the trading.

TokenPost's broader reading put total volume across major meme markets at about $128 million for the day, down 20.1%, with Solana holding 62.8% of it. KIM topping that list on a down day shows how much attention a single headline can pull.

A state-backed hack became a ticker within hours. That says more about meme market reflexes than about the coin itself.

Why this meta fades fast

Headline memecoins live off the news cycle. We saw the same pattern last week with safu memecoins and the broader rotation covered in memecoins binance hack. Most of those tokens peaked within a day and bled out once the story moved on.

There is also no "official" KIM. Every version is just a contract someone deployed to ride a trend, and several share an identical name and ticker. Picking the wrong one is easy, and copycats often launch with tiny liquidity that can vanish in seconds. On pump.fun-style launchpads, anyone can deploy a token with any name for a small fee, so a popular headline can spawn dozens of clones in a single evening, and most of them never see a second day of real trading.

The darker side is worth remembering too. Bitcoin.com notes that suspected North Korean crypto thefts now total around $13.3 billion. Buying a joke coin about that does not touch the stolen funds, but it is not a neutral meme either.

What to do as a reader

Do not assume any kim jong un coin has a team, a roadmap or a reason to exist after this week. Check the exact contract address, pool liquidity and holder concentration on a tracker such as DEX Screener before touching anything.

Watch the six-hour chart, not just the 24-hour gain. A token that is up 490% on the day but down 48% since the morning is already in its fade.

Be wary of airdrop links, "claim" sites and Telegram groups that borrow the name. Hack-themed memes attract phishing because people are already primed by the news.

Nothing here is investment advice. Headline memecoins regularly lose 90% or more within days.

Not financial advice. DYOR, ser.
