apple intelligence qwen: Siri Gets Alibaba AI in China

The apple intelligence qwen partnership brings Alibaba's model to Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence in China, with testing from November 4 and launch in December.

apple intelligence qwen: Siri Gets Alibaba AI in China
tl;dr
  • Apple's own generative models still power the core features; Qwen is an opt-in extension for certain requests.
  • Alibaba says requests and responses sent through the integration will not be used to train its models.
  • The first wave does not include the advanced Siri AI features Apple announced at WWDC 2026.

The apple intelligence qwen deal is finally official. On October 31, Apple announced that the first Apple Intelligence features are coming to iPhone users in China, and that it has partnered with Alibaba to add support for the Qwen model inside Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence. Testing starts November 4 in the latest iOS developer beta, with a public launch alongside iOS 27.3 in December.

What actually happened

Apple's China newsroom lists the first features for supported iPhones: Live Translation in Messages, FaceTime and Phone, Visual Intelligence, Clean Up in Photos, Genmoji, natural-language photo search, priority messages and summaries in Mail, smart replies, notification summaries and Notes transcription summaries. Siri also gains typed conversations that keep context across turns.

Qwen sits on top of that. For some requests, Siri can call on Qwen's broader knowledge to answer directly, and users can ask questions about selected photos and documents, including PDFs and presentations, according to Apple and China Daily. Writing Tools gets a "Compose with Qwen" option that creates original text and images, and Visual Intelligence adds an "Ask Qwen" choice for identifying objects and places through the camera.

Users must opt in. They can sign in with their own Qwen account or with Sign in with Apple, and Apple asks for consent before any question, document or image goes to Qwen, Global Times reported, citing Alibaba's statement.

Who gets it and when

The features arrive on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone 16 and later, iPhone Air and iPhone Duo, with device and Siri language set to English or Simplified Chinese, per Apple. The Qwen option is initially iOS-only for people who bought an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone in China, or whose device region and Apple Account country are both set to China, Xinhua reported. Support for other platforms will follow once approvals are granted.

Regulation shaped the timeline. China's cyberspace regulator completed filings for seven on-device generative AI services, including Apple Intelligence, in July. Global Times adds that the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology approved Alibaba's models for integration into several Apple handsets earlier this month.

Apple did not hand China to Qwen. It built its own features and plugged Qwen in where a bigger model helps.

Why the apple intelligence qwen tie-up matters

For Apple, China is a huge iPhone market where it had shipped no generative AI features at all, more than two years after first unveiling Apple Intelligence. The apple intelligence qwen arrangement solves that by pairing local approval with a domestic model partner.

For Alibaba, it is a distribution win. Xinhua quoted Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications expert Wang Xiaojie calling it the first time a top global consumer hardware maker has used a Chinese large model as the primary system-level AI backbone in the Chinese market. Alibaba CEO Eddie Wu said Qwen will be deeply integrated into Apple's ecosystem.

It also fits a wider pattern of Chinese AI labs racing for scale, which we have tracked in deepseek funding round. And Apple's AI story remains a factor in its market value fight, covered in apple nvidia market cap.

What is still missing

The December release is a first step, not the full package. Apple says the update does not include Siri AI or the other next-generation Apple Intelligence features it showed at WWDC 2026. iPad and Mac support is also waiting on approvals, so for now this is an iPhone story.

The privacy model will draw scrutiny too. Alibaba's promise not to train on requests is a policy commitment rather than a technical guarantee users can verify themselves, so expect researchers and regulators to test how data actually flows once the beta is live.

What to do as a reader

If you are in China and on a supported iPhone, the developer beta from November 4 is the earliest way to try it. Most people should wait for the December iOS 27.3 release.

Check the privacy toggles. The Qwen features are opt-in, and you can control when Qwen is called and what is shared. Read Apple's official announcement for the full feature list and device requirements.

Outside China, nothing changes. Apple's global Apple Intelligence setup is separate from this regional partnership.
