The DeepSeek funding round is the biggest money story in Chinese AI this month. Bloomberg reported on October 22 that DeepSeek raised about 100 billion yuan, roughly $15 billion, with battery giant CATL and Tencent among the largest backers. Reuters and The Wall Street Journal followed with their own sources, and the WSJ says the company is now aiming for a Shanghai listing early next year.

What actually happened

Bloomberg broke the story on Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter. According to that report, the Hangzhou lab raised its target at least twice during talks, first from 50 billion yuan to 80 billion yuan, before landing near 100 billion. CATL and Tencent were named among the biggest investors.

Reuters added detail the same day. Citing four people with knowledge of the matter, it reported investors including chipmaker GigaDevice, food delivery giant Meituan, automaker Geely, appliance maker Midea and existing shareholder NetEase. Boyu Capital, CPE, Legend Capital and existing backer IDG Capital also took part, according to the sources, and the total number of investors topped 15.

Reuters also reported that sources value DeepSeek at 500 billion yuan before the new money. One source said the round would close "in the coming days" but that the details "are not ironclad and could still change." DeepSeek, CATL and Tencent did not immediately respond to Reuters.

Why the DeepSeek funding round matters

DeepSeek became famous for doing more with less. Its models showed that a Chinese lab could compete near the frontier on a fraction of the budget of US giants. A $15 billion war chest changes that story. It buys compute, talent and time.

It also narrows, but does not close, the money gap. Bloomberg noted that OpenAI and Anthropic have each raised more than $100 billion. DeepSeek is still smaller, but it now has the cash to train bigger models and serve more users. The lab shipped DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash last month, and our DeepSeek V4.1 Flash 1017 piece covers how cheap that checkpoint is to run.

The DeepSeek funding round is a signal that Chinese corporate money, from batteries to food delivery, wants a seat at the frontier AI table.

The investor list is the tell. These are not only venture funds. Several are large industrial and consumer companies, many with state ties, which fits Beijing's push to stay competitive with the US in AI.

What Polymarket thinks

Polymarket has a market called "Deepseek IPO by...?" that resolves on credible reporting of a completed initial public offering. Our snapshot from the Polymarket API at 06:00 UTC on October 25:

  • IPO by December 31, 2026: about 5%
  • IPO by March 31, 2027: about 18.5%
  • IPO by June 30, 2027: about 41.5%
  • IPO by September 30, 2027: about 64%
  • IPO by December 31, 2027: about 66%

The headline question here is "Will DeepSeek IPO by March 31, 2027?" and it traded near 18.5% Yes, with a bid around 17 cents and an ask around 20. The whole event had about $57,000 in volume.

Compare that with the reporting. The WSJ says DeepSeek is aiming for a Shanghai listing "early next year," and Reuters reported in September that it hired CITIC Securities to prepare for a possible STAR Market IPO. The market is skeptical that "early" means the first quarter. Most of the probability sits in the middle of 2027, which is a sensible read of how long Chinese listings usually take.

How it fits the AI money race

Valuations are moving fast everywhere. Our OpenAI October valuation piece tracks where the US leader stands, and a DeepSeek listing would give public investors their first direct shot at a top Chinese lab.

Keep the caveats in view. Every number here comes from people familiar with the deal, not from DeepSeek. The final size, the investor list and the valuation could shift before closing.

What to do as a reader

Treat this as confirmed by multiple outlets but not by the company. Watch for an official filing or a statement from DeepSeek, CATL or Tencent. Until then, the DeepSeek funding round is strong reporting, not a press release.

If you trade the Polymarket DeepSeek IPO market, read the rules. It needs a completed IPO, not a filing or an announcement, and an acquisition by a public company resolves it No.

Do not chase "DeepSeek" tokens on DEXs. There is no official DeepSeek coin, and fake tickers tend to pop up around big headlines. Nothing here is investment advice.
