Base Trencher grants are Coinbase's layer-2 openly paying the memecoin crowd to keep the culture going. Base announced the Trencher Grant Program on X at 13:24 UTC (16:24 MSK) on October 26, offering "up to $5,000 for leading a community or creating content about Base culture". By 06:10 UTC (09:10 MSK) on October 28 the post had about 220,000 impressions, 1,582 likes and 316 replies.

What actually happened

The announcement was a short thread with a video on Base's official account. "Trencher" is crypto slang for someone active in on-chain meme trading, the "trenches", and the program is aimed squarely at that group. Exchange.news summarized the thread: applications go through a Google Form that records your email and starts by asking for your full name.

The fine print sits in the last post of the thread. Base may change eligibility at any time, every applicant goes through an internal policy review, and Base alone decides who gets a grant and how much. Winners must pass identity verification and are responsible for their own taxes. Base is the Ethereum layer-2 network incubated by Coinbase, so this is one of the few cases where a network tied to a public US company openly funds meme culture. The post drew 188 quote posts and 342 bookmarks within two days, a sign that plenty of community runners were saving it to apply. ZenDaily's October 27 newsletter also listed the program among the day's notable crypto news.

Why Base Trencher grants matter

Base has spent months leaning into memes as culture rather than a side effect. We covered that shift at the Base Meme Summit, where meme tokens like TOSHI and BRETT were front and center. The Trencher program puts money behind the people who organize that activity: group chat admins, meme page runners, event hosts.

That is a smart, cheap growth lever. A $5,000 grant is small for a network backed by Coinbase, but it can keep an active community leader focused on one chain instead of hopping to Solana or BNB Chain whenever volume moves. The Telegram group with the Base team also gives recipients something valuable that money does not: access.

Paying community leaders is fine. Just remember that a paid community leader is also a paid promoter.

The questions nobody answered yet

The missing details are the interesting part. Without a deadline or a grant count, nobody knows how competitive this is. Without published criteria, nobody knows whether Base will favor trading volume, audience size or content quality. Base also did not say whether recipients must disclose that they are funded, which matters because their content will often talk about specific tokens.

There is also a reputation risk for Base. Memecoin communities include plenty of honest fans, and also plenty of people running pump groups. A policy review is supposed to filter that, but Base has not explained how it works. Network upgrades like the Base Denim upgrade build the rails. Base Trencher grants decide who gets amplified on them.

What to do as a reader

If you run a Base meme or trading community, the only official path is the form linked in Base's own X thread. Do not apply through links in replies, direct messages or Telegram. Grant announcements are a magnet for phishing forms that ask for wallet keys. A real grant form never needs your seed phrase.

Expect identity checks and taxes if you win. Keep records of what you did for the community, including dates, links and member counts, since Base says it decides at its own discretion.

If you follow a creator or group, watch for disclosure. A grant does not make someone dishonest, but it does give them a reason to talk up the chain. Judge token calls by evidence, not by how loud the community is. Nothing here is investment advice.
