Anthropic memecoin rug: $493M Volume, $9 Left in the Pool

The Anthropic memecoin rug shows how a fake ANT token on BNB Chain rode the real IPO headline to about $493 million in volume before its pool was drained.

Anthropic memecoin rug: $493M Volume, $9 Left in the Pool
tl;dr
  • Data aggregator sasa ranked it the most traded memecoin of October 27, with about $493 million of 24-hour volume.
  • Its highest recorded market cap was about $17 million, a tiny number next to that volume.
  • The biggest single trade was a $1.36 million sale early on October 28 UTC, shortly before the pool emptied.

The Anthropic memecoin rug is the cleanest example yet of traders front-running a headline they did not understand. A BNB Chain token called "Anthropic" with the ticker ANT opened its first pool at 13:48 UTC on October 27, one day after the real Anthropic filed to list on Nasdaq under the same ticker. By 06:03 UTC (09:03 MSK) on October 28, DexScreener showed the pool with about $9 of liquidity left and a price down 100% on the day.

What actually happened

On Monday, October 26, Anthropic filed an S-1 registration statement with the SEC and said it intends to list its Class A stock on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the symbol "ANT". That is a stock ticker. Anthropic has not announced any crypto token, and nothing in the filing mentions one.

Memecoin launchers did what they always do with a big brand headline. A token named Anthropic, ticker ANT, appeared on PancakeSwap on BNB Chain on Tuesday afternoon UTC. Sasa's day page lists it as the most traded new memecoin of October 27, with $492.93 million in 24-hour volume and a market cap of about $6.9 million at the end of the day.

The trade log is the giveaway. Sasa's list of the largest trades shows dozens of buys and sells clustered between roughly $32,000 and $35,000, coming from different wallets within minutes of each other. Buys and sells were almost evenly split, with 3,920 buys and 3,964 sells across 7,884 trades in 24 hours. That symmetric, same-size pattern is what volume farming usually looks like. It is not proof by itself, but it explains how a token that never cleared $17 million in market cap printed half a billion dollars of volume.

Then came the exit. A $1.36 million sale hit the pool early on Wednesday UTC, and by our snapshot the pool held $9.31 of liquidity. DexScreener showed 24-hour volume of about $523.8 million and a 100% drop over 6 and 24 hours.

Why the Anthropic memecoin rug worked

The setup had three ingredients. First, a real, massive news event. Anthropic's IPO filing showed $16.3 billion of revenue for the first half of 2026, and it dominated every feed. Second, a perfect ticker match. "ANT" is short, easy to search and now attached to a famous company. Third, a chain where launch costs are low and bots can churn volume to push a token up trending lists.

Trending lists rank by volume, and volume is cheap to fake. Once a token tops a list, real buyers show up. That is the moment insiders want. We saw a similar playbook in the Quack AI surge, where analysts flagged most of the reported volume as wash trading.

A matching ticker is not a connection. If the company did not post the contract address, the company is not behind the coin.

The brand confusion problem

This is not the first time a stock ticker story spilled into memecoins. Our Anthropic ticker odds piece covered Polymarket bets on the exact symbol before the filing. Once "ANT" was confirmed, any token with that name became an instant magnet for search traffic. Sasa also lists other ANT-named contracts on BNB Chain from the same day, which is normal after any big headline.

The losers here are late buyers who saw a top-ranked token with an AI brand name and assumed it had some link to the company. It did not. Anthropic stock is not even trading yet. Polymarket traders currently expect the IPO in November.

What to do as a reader

The Anthropic memecoin rug took less than a day from first pool to an empty pool, so speed is part of the trap. Never buy a token because it shares a name or ticker with a company. Check the company's official website and social accounts for a contract address. If there is none, assume no link.

Look at liquidity, not volume. A token with hundreds of millions in volume and only a few hundred thousand dollars in liquidity is a warning sign. Here, liquidity fell to under $10. Tools like DexScreener show both numbers on one page.

Check the trade size pattern. Long runs of near-identical buys and sells from fresh wallets point to bots, not fans. If you want exposure to the real company, wait for the actual Nasdaq listing and use a regulated broker. Nothing here is investment advice.
