The tether q3 profit came in at $1.5 billion, matching the previous quarter, while the company's reserve buffer nearly doubled. Tether published its third-quarter attestation, prepared by accounting firm BDO, showing $191.5 billion in reserve assets against about $183.5 billion in liabilities as of September 30, 2026. That leaves $7.95 billion in excess reserves, up from $4.1 billion at the end of June.

What actually happened

Tether released the figures in a statement on its site. USDT issuance held broadly steady at about $184 billion through the first three quarters, and most of the income still came from US Treasury bills and reverse repurchase agreements. The tether q3 profit figure is labeled net operating profit, which is the company's own measure. Of the roughly $183.5 billion in total liabilities, almost all, about $183.47 billion, relates to digital tokens in circulation, so the reserve-to-token ratio is the number to watch.

CEO Paolo Ardoino framed the bigger buffer as a safety cushion rather than a trophy. "Generating $1.5 billion in net operating profit while maintaining nearly $8.0 billion in excess reserves gives us a strong foundation for that work," he said, adding that the aim is to meet redemptions when markets come under pressure.

Cointelegraph added context. Tether's Treasury exposure is comparable to South Korea's $134.2 billion in US government debt and larger than the United Arab Emirates' $116.1 billion, based on August Treasury Department data. USDT accounts for about 60% of a stablecoin market worth roughly $297.3 billion, according to DefiLlama.

Why the buffer matters this week

Timing is everything. The attestation landed in the same week as the Binance hack, when stablecoin issuers were suddenly in the spotlight. The Block reported that Tether was among the industry partners that helped freeze roughly $3 billion in assets linked to the attacker, which we covered in binance 6.3b hack.

A thicker equity cushion means Tether can absorb more losses on its reserves before USDT holders are exposed. With nearly $8 billion over liabilities, a sharp drop in the value of non-Treasury holdings such as bitcoin would hit the buffer first. That is the whole point of excess reserves, and it is why the number grew faster than profit alone would explain.

Profit was flat. The cushion nearly doubled. For a stablecoin, the second number matters more.

What the report does not say

An attestation is a snapshot, not a full audit. It confirms what assets and liabilities existed on a given date, but it does not cover everything that happened during the quarter. Cointelegraph notes that Tether announced in August that KPMG had completed its first full independent audit, but the audited statements were not made public.

The reserve mix also includes riskier assets than pure Treasuries, such as bitcoin. The higher BTC value helped lift the buffer this quarter, but the same exposure could shrink it in a weak quarter. With bitcoin trading below $78,000 this weekend after a sharp October drop, the next report could look different.

There is also the question of what drives profit from here. Most of the income comes from Treasury bills and repo, so it depends on short-term US interest rates. If rates fall, the same reserve pile earns less. Ardoino's statement leans on the long-term story of building infrastructure, but the near-term earnings engine is still a very large money market book.

Tether q3 profit versus the wider market

Tether's numbers stand out against a tougher backdrop for other stablecoins. Crypto Briefing reported that Circle redeemed about $11.7 billion of USDC in the week to October 29, with supply slipping to around $70 billion. USDT, by contrast, has held near $184 billion. What to do as a reader

Read the source document, not just the headline. Tether's Q3 announcement links to the full BDO report with the reserve breakdown.

Remember that a stablecoin is only as stable as its issuer and its reserves. Diversifying across issuers and keeping only what you need on exchanges reduces single-point risk.

Watch next quarter's bitcoin mark. It is the part of the reserve most likely to swing the buffer in either direction.
