Memecoin altcoin share Hits a Record Low of About 3%
tl;dr
  • Darkfost's ratio compares the combined value of meme coins with the total value of altcoins, meaning crypto excluding Bitcoin. It fell to 0.027, per Crypto Briefing and Bloomingbit.
  • In July 2026 the share was 3.7%, already the lowest since February 2024. During the November 2024 meme season it peaked above 10%.
  • Darkfost said extreme gaps like this have historically left room for a meme rebound, but warned the data alone is not a clear reversal signal.

Memecoin altcoin share just printed a record low. CryptoQuant analyst Darkfost said on October 5 that meme coins now make up only about 3% of total altcoin market cap, a ratio of 0.027 and the lowest reading the metric has ever shown.

What actually happened

Darkfost, a contributor at on-chain analytics firm CryptoQuant, posted the chart on X on October 5. Crypto Briefing and Korean outlet Bloomingbit both picked it up the same day. The headline number is simple: memes are about 3 cents of every altcoin dollar right now.

The slide has been steady. Crypto Briefing reports the ratio hit 3.7% in July 2026, which was the lowest since February 2024 at the time. Now it has gone lower still. Compare that with November 2024, when meme season pushed the ratio above 10%.

So memes are not dead. They are just getting lapped. Altcoins have outperformed meme coins in recent months, and that gap is what the ratio is measuring.

Why the memecoin altcoin share keeps shrinking

Darkfost pointed to three forces. First, performance: altcoins have simply done better than meme coins lately. When non-meme alts rally harder, the meme slice gets smaller even if memes are flat.

Second, supply. New meme coins launch nonstop, and Bloomingbit quotes Darkfost saying that memecoins, like altcoins, have grown sharply in number, which further dilutes liquidity. More tickers, same pool of degen money, smaller average bag.

Third, interest. Crypto Briefing says the number of meme coin holders has fallen to multi-year lows. Fewer wallets, fewer buyers, less fuel.

You can see all three forces in this week's tape. Launchpads keep spitting out tokens, a lot of them pump and fade in hours, and the attention moves on. One example from this week: Hood Inu on Robinhood Chain ran to a peak near five cents on October 5, then traded around $0.0003 by Tuesday morning, according to DexPaprika data. Even big moments, like the SHIB on Solana launch, did not reverse the trend on their own.

Record low share does not mean record low price. It means everything else ran faster.

One caveat on the metric itself, and this is our read rather than CryptoQuant's: a market-cap ratio says nothing about trading volume or how many people are actually active. Memes can be loud on the timeline while still being a small slice of the value.

The bull case, and its limits

Here is the part meme maxis will screenshot. Crypto Briefing notes that in late 2025 the ratio dipped to around 3.2%, and what followed was a notable bounce. In early 2026, tokens including Dogecoin, Shiba Inu and Bonk staged recoveries after that low.

Today's reading is below that late 2025 trough. If history rhymes, extreme divergence can set up a catch-up trade. That is the optimistic read, and Darkfost himself said such gaps have historically left the door open for a recovery.

But he also said, clearly, that the current data alone does not give a clear signal that a reversal is coming. One past bounce is a data point, not a law of physics. Our September memecoin rally recap is a good reminder that sector rallies can be short and selective.

What to do as a reader

Use the memecoin altcoin share as a mood ring, not a trigger. A record low tells you memes are out of favor relative to other alts. It does not tell you when that changes.

If you want meme exposure, think in baskets and sizing, not lottery tickets. Our memecoin index rebalance explainer walks through how index-style exposure behaves compared with single coins.

Watch for confirmation. A real rotation would usually show up as rising holder counts, stronger meme volumes versus alts, and the ratio actually turning up, not just one green day on a single dog coin.

And remember the dilution point. In a market with endless new tickers, picking the one that survives is the hard part. Size small, take profits when you have them, and never chase a ticker just because the chart looks cheap. Not investment advice. Memes are a vibe, ser, and vibes change fast.

Not financial advice. DYOR, ser.
