October memecoin index rebalance swaps seven names

The memecoin index rebalance was announced September 16 and scheduled for the close of September 30. The live constituents page, opened after that clock, shows the new names and not the deleted ones.

The memecoin index rebalance for the CoinDesk Memecoin Index is a membership change, not a meme. CoinDesk Indices dated the notice September 16, 2026, using data from September 14, and said the changes would be implemented at 4 p.m. Eastern Time on September 30, 2026. That is 11 p.m. in Moscow, because late September on the U.S. East Coast is still daylight time, four hours behind UTC.

TL;DR - Seven additions each carry a 2.00% target weight in the notice: Simon's Cat (CAT), 龙虾, Kekius Maximus (KEKIUS), Notcoin (NOT), Non-Playable Coin (NPC), pipedog (PIPEDOG), and Purr (PURR). - Seven deletions are SATS, Ponke, Rats, MemeCore, Dogelon Mars, Milady, and Koma Inu. Milady missed a $1 million average-daily-value-traded floor. The notice says the other deletions fell outside the top 50 on that same measure. - The constituents page opened for this article listed the additions and did not list those deleted tickers in the table that loaded. That page is a live tape. It is not the target-weight table.

What actually happened

The notice is a short reconstitution. Table 1 lists each addition at a 2.00% weight and marks the status Addition. The deletions are listed with the weights they had recently, not with a new target: SATS (Ordinals) 1.79%, Ponke 1.85%, Rats 2.46%, MemeCore (M) 1.40%, Dogelon Mars (ELON) 1.56%, Milady Meme Coin (LADYS) 1.64%, and Koma Inu (KOMA, komabnb.com) 3.38%. A footnote says LADYS did not meet the minimum 1 million ADVT threshold. Every other deletion, the footnote says, is because the asset fell outside the top 50 by average daily value traded. The weight shown for a deletion is the constituent's recent weight in the index, not a forecast.

Timing has two more clocks. Weighting adjustment factors were to be determined on September 23, 2026, and then used to calculate target weights. Final weights were to be calculated on September 30, 2026, at 4 p.m. Eastern, using the reference rates at that time and the factors from September 23. The September 16 PDF does not print those final weights. A 2.00% figure in the additions table is the target in the notice. It is not a promise that the index still holds exactly 2% of that coin on October 2. Prices move, and the reference-rate step exists so the implemented weight can differ from the placeholder.

The constituents page is the second source, and it is the same index publisher's live table rather than a second newsroom. When it was opened, the index level on the page was 324.07, up 0.27% on the session figure shown. The table included Notcoin, 龙虾, Non-Playable Coin, Purr, Simon's Cat, pipedog, and Kekius Maximus. It also included larger, older names that the notice does not touch, such as Dogecoin, Pepe, Shiba Inu, and Bonk. The deleted names from the PDF, SATS, Ponke, Rats, MemeCore, Dogelon Mars, Milady, and Koma Inu, were not in the rows that loaded. Absence from a rendered table is evidence that the page did not show them. It is not, by itself, a signed statement that the implementation file matched the PDF line by line.

A few prints on that live table are worth keeping next to the membership list, because they show what "in the index" does not mean. 龙虾 was shown at $0.06348, with a 24-hour change of minus 23.70% and a 7-day change of minus 56.82%. Purr was shown at $0.1623, up 16.32% on the day and 21.04% on the week. pipedog's market-cap cell displayed as 00.00 while a 24-hour volume of $1.67 million was on the same row. Kekius Maximus also showed a 00.00 market-cap cell. Those cells are the page as opened. They are not index weights, and they are not a claim that the coins have no supply.

How an index deletion actually works

A memecoin index rebalance does not burn tokens and does not delist them from exchanges. Calling the memecoin index rebalance a ranking of which joke is funnier is how people end up trading a footnote. It changes a basket that a publisher calculates. If a fund or a product licenses the index, that product may have to trade. The PDF does not name any fund, and this article did not open a fund fact sheet. The practical reading for everyone else is simpler: Milady, Ponke, Rats, and the other deletions can still trade everywhere they traded yesterday. They are out of this basket because of a liquidity rank, or, in Milady's case, a stated ADVT miss. Koma Inu's recent weight in the notice, 3.38%, is the largest deletion on the page. Leaving the basket at that size matters to anyone tracking the index. It does not, on these two pages, say anything about a exploit, a team, or a chart pattern.

The additions are the mirror image. A 2% target is a seat, not a medal. Notcoin, Purr, and Simon's Cat are very different objects from a ticker whose market-cap cell will not print. The index methodology link is in the PDF. This article did not open the methodology, so it does not restate eligibility rules beyond the footnote that is actually in the notice. The footnote is enough to retire one bad habit: assuming every deletion is a scandal. Here, the publisher wrote down a liquidity rule.

The notice's disclaimer is blunt. CoinDesk Indices says the content is informational, that it does not guarantee the data, and that nothing in it is an offer or investment advice. It also says the document may not be forwarded or redistributed without consent. This article describes the table. It is not a republication of the PDF.

What the pages do not show

The memecoin index rebalance pages do not show a price target for any coin. Anyone quoting the memecoin index rebalance as a buy list skipped the publisher's own disclaimer. They do not show who has to buy the additions. They do not show whether 龙虾's sharp 7-day drop on the constituents page happened before or after the 4 p.m. Eastern implementation. The constituents page did not, in the copy that loaded, print a timestamp on each row. Quoting the row is fair. Dating the row to the minute is not.

Dogecoin's row on that page showed a price of $0.09422, a market cap of $14.59 billion, and 24-hour volume of $379.20 million. Pepe showed a market cap of $1.82 billion. Those figures describe the large end of the same table. They are not part of the addition list, and they will be stale by the time you read this. The point of including them is scale. A 2% seat next to a multi-billion-dollar constituent is a different job from being the whole story on a timeline.

For the September tape these coins came out of, see the September memecoin rally note. For what a thin coin can do when the crowd leaves, see the JACK crash note. Neither is this index, and neither replaces the publisher's table.

What to do as a reader (not a trade)

This is not investment advice. Do not buy an addition because a PDF assigned it 2.00%, and do not dump a deletion because it lost a seat. If you track the basket, write down three clocks from the notice: data as of September 14, factors on September 23, implementation at 4 p.m. Eastern on September 30. Then look at the constituents page and see whether the names match. If a market-cap cell reads 00.00, treat that as a data hole, not as a free coin and not as a zero.

Check the contract links the notice bothers to print. Kekius Maximus is tagged kekiusmaximus.vip, pipedog is tagged pipedog.xyz, and Koma Inu is tagged komabnb.com. Same-ticker lookalikes are the whole sport. The primary document is the CoinDesk Indices October rebalance PDF. The live cross-check is the constituents page. One tells you what was scheduled. The other shows what the publisher was displaying after the clock.
