The coinbase prediction markets business just became the brightest line in a weak quarter. Coinbase said its prediction markets product passed $200 million in annualized revenue in Q3, roughly doubling from the prior quarter, even as total revenue fell about 35% year over year on slumping spot trading. Net income still jumped 66% to about $719 million, mostly thanks to gains on its crypto holdings.
What actually happened
Coinbase reported third-quarter results on October 29. CNBC said the company earned $2.51 per share and that revenue of about $1.20 billion trailed the roughly $1.233 billion analysts expected, according to LSEG. The Block's Daily put total revenue at $1.22 billion, down 35%, with net income up 66% to $719 million.
Most of the profit came from marks on Coinbase's crypto portfolio. RG.org's breakdown of the filing noted $715 million in net gains on crypto assets held for investment, which the company strips out of its adjusted figures. Adjusted net income was about $77.7 million and adjusted EBITDA about $332.9 million.
The operating story was all about new products. "Prediction markets have been one of the fastest-growing products in Coinbase history, growing even through slower sports months driven by crypto contracts where we have a strong right to win," CEO Brian Armstrong said in the release, as quoted by RG.org.
Why coinbase prediction markets matter so much
Spot trading is shrinking. RG.org reported the quarterly filing tied lower transaction revenue mainly to a 59% drop in consumer spot volume and a 53% drop in institutional spot volume year over year. The Block said spot volume also fell about 8% from the prior quarter to $135 billion.
Prediction markets and derivatives filled part of that hole. On the earnings call, management said users are "putting incremental dollars to trade in prediction markets and derivatives" while still trading spot at a lower level. Bernstein analysts made the same point, according to The Block.
Coinbase did not disclose a quarterly revenue figure for the product, only the run rate. It also said users who trade predictions drive extra spot volume, which is the kind of cross-sell exchanges love.
Polymarket made event contracts cool. Coinbase is trying to make them a revenue line.
The bigger prediction market picture
This lands in a wild week for the sector. Polymarket's international site was hit by a third-party script compromise, and the U.S. midterms are days away. More platforms, more volume and more attention also mean more scrutiny on security and fairness.
We have tracked the competitive side in polymarket cmo fired and Coinbase's own security headaches in coinbase amplitude breach. The coinbase prediction markets surge shows exchanges now see event contracts as core, not a side bet.
What else was in the quarter
Prediction markets were not the only new line. CNBC noted that Coinbase introduced Coinbase for Agents in early October, letting users plug AI agents into portfolio research and trading, and has been building an "everything exchange" with tokenized stocks, derivatives and token sales. The earnings call also highlighted the integration of Deribit into its derivatives platform.
Stablecoins held up too. The Block said stablecoin revenue rose about 3% to $328 million, a steady contributor while trading volumes swing.
What to do as a reader
Read the numbers carefully. A $200 million run rate is an annualized figure, not quarterly revenue, and headline net income was driven by crypto price gains that can reverse.
If you trade event contracts on any platform, compare fees, settlement rules and which jurisdictions each venue serves. The same question can resolve differently across platforms if the rules differ.
For primary details, start with the CNBC earnings report and Coinbase's own shareholder materials rather than social media summaries.
Keep an eye on the next quarter too. If the run rate keeps compounding while spot stays soft, the mix of the business changes fast.
