Shopify Shop MCP Lets Any Agent Search 1B+ Products and Pay With Shop Pay
Shopify Shop MCP went live Oct 13 at mcp.shop.com: one MCP connection gives agents 17 tools to search 1B+ Catalog products, build carts and check out with Shop Pay.

- Signed-in shoppers can pay with saved Shop Pay details without leaving the agent; carts and checkout also work without sign-in on Shopify stores.
- For stores that do not run on Shopify, the shopper approves the purchase in Shop, and the agent receives single-use card details to pay on that store's own checkout.
- There are no webhooks at launch, so developers have to poll get_checkout for status, and existing Catalog API integrations keep working unchanged.

Shopify Shop MCP is live, and it turns any MCP-compatible AI agent into a shopping assistant that can actually pay. Shopify's developer changelog, dated October 13, says one connection to the server at mcp.shop.com gives an agent 17 tools to search Shopify Catalog, build carts and complete Shop Pay checkout. Catalog covers over 1 billion products, and search works without an API key.
What actually happened
Shopify published the change as a "New" item in its developer changelog. The server lives at https://mcp.shop.com, with a skill description at mcp.shop.com/skill.md that agents can read to learn the tools. The flows are grouped clearly: search and product details through search_catalog, lookup_catalog and get_product; sign-in with Shop so search can use saved sizes and preferences; carts and checkout on Shopify stores; checkout on non-Shopify stores; and order lookup with search_orders.
The key line is about drop-off. Before Shop MCP, an agent could find a product in Catalog but had to send the shopper to the store's website to pay. Now a signed-in shopper can confirm the total and payment method, and the agent completes the purchase with complete_checkout. Orders placed this way show up in the merchant's Shopify admin like any other order.
AT Pulse's October 14 edition framed it from the shopper side: since October 13, people can link any agent to their Shop account, replacing partnership-only access. Citing The Verge, it also noted the move widens Shopify's split with Amazon, which blocks such agents. The 1 billion figure is Shopify-reported, not an independent count.
Why Shopify Shop MCP matters for agents
The Model Context Protocol has become the default plug for giving agents tools. Plenty of MCP servers read data or edit files. Shopify Shop MCP reaches into the one action that moves money in the real economy: checkout. That makes it a big step for agentic commerce, and a big trust question.
Shopify's design keeps a human in the loop at the payment step. The agent builds the cart and creates the checkout, but completion with Shop Pay happens after the shopper confirms the total and payment method. Off-Shopify purchases go through an approval in Shop, then a single-use card. That card model limits the blast radius if an agent misbehaves, because the card is good for one purchase. AT Pulse, again citing The Verge, adds that approval is the default but an optional setting allows payments within a set budget, so read your own settings before you let an agent shop unattended.
Agents could already browse. Now they can reach the register, and the shopper still has to nod.
There is a standards race happening around this. Our Personal Agent Protocol coverage followed the draft open standard for agents acting on behalf of customers, with OpenAI, Visa and PayPal on board. Shopify is shipping a working, product-specific server now. Those two approaches can coexist, but merchants will feel the pressure to support whatever their customers' agents speak.
How developers can try it
The changelog gives a short path. Install the CLI with npm install -g @shopify/shop, then run a search like shop search "ceramic coffee dripper" to see store, price and stock data in your terminal. Next, point your agent at the skill.md file or add mcp.shop.com as an MCP server in its config.
For Shop Pay, the shopper has to sign in with Shop. Shopify says MCP clients such as Claude and ChatGPT run sign-in for you, and custom code can use a device flow. Test a purchase end to end; Shopify says it worked if the checkout returns status completed with an order. Search needs no credentials, but higher rate limits require an API key from the Shopify Dev Dashboard.
What to do as a reader
If you build agents, Shopify Shop MCP is one of the easiest ways to add real shopping to a demo without negotiating a partnership. Start with search only, add carts, and leave payment for last. Since there are no webhooks yet, design for polling and timeouts from day one.
If you just shop, treat agent checkout like handing someone your card at a counter. Confirm the total, the store and the payment method every time, and check your Shop order history after the first few tries. If you use AI inside your work tools, the same habit applies; our Claude for Google Workspace piece covers what happens when an assistant can edit your files. And do not confuse this with model news like Muse Wonder, Meta's frontier model launch; this is plumbing, not a new brain.
