Claude for Google Workspace: AI Sidebar in Docs, Sheets and Slides
Claude for Google Workspace is in public beta: an add-on that puts Claude in a sidebar inside Docs, Sheets and Slides, plus connectors that let Claude edit Google files from chat.

- Anthropic announced the add-on and the Docs, Sheets and Slides connectors, both in beta, on October 6. You install it from the Google Workspace Marketplace.
- Default mode is "Ask before edits," where every change shows up as an approval card. An "Accept all edits" mode lets Claude run through a task without stopping.
- Your Claude models, connectors and skills come with you into the sidebar. Enterprise controls like the Compliance API and customer-managed encryption keys apply too.

Claude for Google Workspace is now in public beta on every paid Claude plan. Anthropic's new add-on puts Claude in a sidebar inside Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, where it can read the open file, see what you selected and edit in place. New connectors also let Claude create and edit Google files from the chat side.
What actually happened
Anthropic published the launch post, "Claude now works with Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides," on October 6. 9to5Google covered it the same day, noting that Gemini already lives natively in Workspace, so this is mainly for people who already prefer Claude.
There are two pieces. The add-on brings Claude into your open file. The connectors go the other way, letting Claude open a pane beside your conversation and create or edit Google files directly from the chat. Claude's access follows your existing Google sharing permissions.
To start, install from the Marketplace, open a file and go to Extensions, then Claude, then Open Claude. Admins can push it to a whole domain or selected groups from the Google Admin console. On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner has to enable the connectors first.
What it can do in each app
In Docs, Claude can fix a sentence or restyle a heading without wrecking surrounding formatting. For bigger rewrites it proposes suggestion cards that highlight the passage it wants to change, and you apply or dismiss each one.
In Sheets, it writes formulas, builds pivot tables and native charts, and adds tabs. For joins or data cleaning, Anthropic says it can pull a range into Python and write results back. The example: start from an empty sheet, attach source files and ask for a Q3 budget-versus-actuals report with a tab per team.
In Slides, it builds new slides from your deck's layouts and themes, then checks for elements that overlap, run off the slide or are hard to read. Anyone who has fixed a deck at 1 a.m. knows why that matters.
The AI fight is moving from chat windows into the apps where people already work.
Why this is a big deal
Distribution is the whole game in AI right now. Google Workspace is where a huge share of office work happens, and until now Gemini had the home-field advantage there. With Claude for Google Workspace, Anthropic gets a seat inside the files without asking anyone to leave Google.
The skills angle is underrated. Anthropic's example is a quarterly business review deck: Claude pulls account history from Salesforce and call notes from Google Drive, and if you save the QBR format as a skill, the next deck follows the same steps. That turns a one-off prompt into a repeatable workflow.
It also lands on the same day Anthropic expanded its Claude Startups program with a free year of Claude Team, up to five premium seats, and $1,000 in API credits for eligible startups, per TechCrunch. Companies qualify if they were founded in the last five years or raised money in the last two. Anthropic is clearly pushing to get Claude into more daily workflows.

What to do as a reader
If you already pay for Claude and live in Google Docs or Sheets, try it on a low-stakes file first. Keep "Ask before edits" on until you trust how it handles your formatting, and check every formula it writes before you share the sheet.
If you are an admin, read the setup guide before deploying, decide which groups get it, and confirm the connectors match your sharing policy. Beta means features and limits can change.
And if you are a Gemini user, there is no reason to switch just because of this. Compare both on your actual work. Claude for Google Workspace is a solid move, but your own docs are the real benchmark. Check the official announcement for the details. Not financial advice, just productivity hype done carefully.
