Polymarket onchain asset talk is real but early: at TOKEN2049, Shayne Coplan said the company is exploring a stock-like asset with programmable utility. No token yet.

Early story. Some claims here are not officially confirmed yet. We update this post as it confirms.

Polymarket onchain asset: Coplan Teases Stock-Like Token at TOKEN2049
tl;dr
  • Coplan floated the idea in a fireside chat with Balaji Srinivasan and described it as something like an ideal version of a stock, according to attendees and Crypto Briefing.
  • As of October 7, Polymarket has no native token. It has filed trademarks for POLY and $POLY before, and none of those filings has turned into a launch.
  • He also said Polymarket's U.S. arm is "about to have an FCM," and teased that "there will be news… coming soon" on bringing onchain finance to the U.S.

A Polymarket onchain asset is officially on the whiteboard. On October 7 at TOKEN2049 in Singapore, CEO Shayne Coplan said the company is exploring an onchain asset tied to Polymarket's economy with "real programmable utility," but he gave no name, no timeline and no structure, and he did not launch a token.

What actually happened

The session was a 30-minute fireside chat on the OKX Main Stage, moderated by Srinivasan, per NBTC News. It was not livestreamed, so most of what we know comes from attendees posting from the room. That matters, because the exact wording varies between accounts.

Lookonchain's version has Coplan calling the concept "what the concept of a stock should have been." A trader cited by NBTC quotes him as exploring "an on-chain asset tied to Polymarket's economics that also has real programmatic utility." Another attendee, StuPredicts, described it as something that could represent "some economics in the company."

The key detail for degens: nobody reports Coplan actually saying the word "token." He also repeated that his remarks were not legal or financial advice. Crypto Briefing summed it up neatly: the discussion was about what Polymarket might build, not about a product or a date.

Why the Polymarket onchain asset idea is not random

The paper trail is real. Crypto Briefing notes the POLY and $POLY trademark filings, which have been sitting there without a launch. Polymarket also just moved to Protocol V2, which uses single ERC-1155 positions to represent bets onchain.

Then there is the shareholder angle. Coplan said Intercontinental Exchange, the parent of the New York Stock Exchange, is one of Polymarket's largest shareholders and is working with regulators on onchain stocks, according to Wu Blockchain and PANews posts cited by NBTC. ICE said in October 2025 it would invest up to $2 billion at an $8 billion pre-money valuation, and NBTC says it added another $600 million in March.

So a Polymarket onchain asset that behaves "like a stock" sits right at the overlap of tokenization, a regulated U.S. exchange and a very large TradFi backer. That is a lot more interesting than a points farm.

The revenue flex and the hype

Some of the buzz came from a revenue chart circulating at the conference. Crypto Briefing reports one comparison that put Polymarket at about $9.9 million in revenue versus Hyperliquid at $2.64 million. We could not verify the period or method behind those numbers, so treat them as a talking point, not a stat.

Coplan also talked strategy. He called sports the distribution engine, not the destination, and said he wants outside users to be able to create markets. Srinivasan pitched "retroarchy," the idea that resolved markets become a ledger of what people expected and what really happened.

He had a second TOKEN2049 slot scheduled for Thursday, October 8, on the Institutional stage, StuPredicts said. If anything concrete drops, that is the obvious place.

What this does not mean

It does not mean there is a token to buy. There is no official Polymarket onchain asset, ticker, contract or claim page. Any "POLY presale" or airdrop link you see this week is a scam until Polymarket says otherwise on its own channels.

It also does not mean old points or trading history will convert into anything. Nothing about eligibility was said. Equity-like rights onchain would also run straight into U.S. securities rules, which is probably why Coplan kept repeating "not advice."

What to do as a reader

Keep using Polymarket for what it is, and ignore anyone selling you a Polymarket token today. Watch the official X account, coverage of that October 8 session and any regulatory filing tied to the FCM comment. Those are the places real news would show up first.

If you want context on how the platform is evolving, read our Polymarket V2 explainer and our look at Galaxy's Polymarket retail losses research. Exploring is not launching. Until there is a name, a structure and an official link, the only safe move is patience.

Not financial advice. DYOR, ser.
