Memecoin peak market caps are back in the conversation after a chart comparing each big meme token's all-time high with today went viral on X over the weekend. The numbers are brutal. At 05:58 UTC on October 20, CoinGecko data showed Dogecoin about 89% below its 2021 peak price, Shiba Inu about 94% below, and the TRUMP token roughly 98% below its January 2025 high.
What actually happened
On Sunday, an X trending story picked up a chart that compared memecoin peak market caps with current values. The chart, credited to the account Maison Ghost, put Dogecoin's peak near $88B, Shiba Inu near $41B and TRUMP around $11B, with the full sector now somewhere in the $25B to $30B range. We could not open the original post, so treat those peak cap figures as the chart's estimates.
What we can check is price drawdowns. Market cap at the peak depends on circulating supply at that moment, which changes, so ATH price is the cleaner yardstick. Here is the CoinGecko snapshot at 05:58 UTC on October 20.
The scoreboard
Dogecoin trades at $0.0793, about 89.2% below its 2021 peak. Shiba Inu is about 94.2% below its October 2021 high, with a market cap near $2.95B. Pepe is about 85.1% under its December 2024 top, at around $1.76B.
The 2024 to 2025 Solana generation looks worse. Bonk is roughly 95.0% below its November 2024 high. Dogwifhat is about 95.9% below its March 2024 peak of $4.83, now near $0.20. Fartcoin is about 94.2% off its January 2025 top. Pudgy Penguins' PENGU is roughly 89% below its December 2024 high, and Floki is about 93% down.
Then there is TRUMP. The official Trump memecoin traded at $1.70, about 97.7% below its peak of $73.43 on January 19, 2025, with a market cap around $478M. That is the biggest drawdown on the list.
The relative outlier is Pump.fun's own PUMP token: about $0.00439 and roughly 50% below its September 2025 high, with a market cap near $2.03B. Being the casino rather than a chip has helped.
Memecoins: the only asset class where "down 89%" makes you the blue chip.
Why the peaks keep shrinking
Two forces stand out. The first is supply: every week thousands of new tokens launch on Pump.fun and similar platforms, so attention and money get split across far more tickers than in 2021. The second is rotation: traders chase the newest launch for hours and move on, which drains liquidity from older coins. That matches the X story's mention of heavy memecoin selling on Binance and a shrinking meme share of trading, which we have not verified independently.
Our earlier piece on the memecoin altcoin share showed memes falling to around 3% of altcoin activity, and the September memecoin rally was a squeeze that faded fast. Today's snapshot fits the same pattern. Even so, the sector is still a nearly $30B market, and Dogecoin dominates it.
What the chart leaves out
Peak market caps are a sentiment snapshot, not a fair value. Many of these coins had small circulating supplies, thin books and euphoric buyers at the top, so the "peak" was never really cashable at size. Comparing memecoin peak market caps to today mostly measures how much froth left, not how much value was destroyed.
A drawdown chart also hides survivorship. The coins on the list are the winners that are still trading. Thousands of others went to zero and never made a chart.
What to do as a reader
Use drawdowns as a reality check, not a buy signal. "Down 95% from the top" does not mean a coin is cheap. It can fall another 95%. Look at volume, liquidity and whether anyone is still building or trading before assuming a comeback.
If you do trade memes, size small, take profits on the way up and expect deep drawdowns as the base case. Nothing here is investment advice.
