The McRib Indicator is a brand-new Solana memecoin that ripped more than 1,000% within hours of McDonald's confirming the McRib's early comeback. Its main PumpSwap pool was created on the evening of October 22 UTC, and by 05:57 UTC Friday it had done about $4.95 million in volume on a market cap of only around $547,000.

What actually happened

On October 22, USA TODAY reported that the McRib is coming back sooner than its usual annual run, but not nationwide. McDonald's confirmed a limited-time regional return starting October 27, naming cities including Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Atlanta, Philadelphia and Dallas. Fans on the McRib Locator website had already reported sightings this week in places like San Antonio and Charlotte, and Columbus, Ohio, was expected to get it on October 26.

Crypto did what crypto does. A token called The McRib Indicator appeared on Solana via pump.fun. DexScreener data shows its main McRib/SOL pool on PumpSwap was created at about 19:23 UTC on October 22, shortly after the news spread.

By our 05:57 UTC check on October 23, that pool showed a price around $0.00056, a 24-hour change of about +1,173%, roughly $4.95 million in 24-hour volume and about $75,800 in liquidity. Market cap was around $547,000. The name plays on the idea of treating a sandwich comeback as a market signal, which is exactly the kind of joke memecoin traders love.

Inside the token numbers

DexAlerts, which pulls automated checks from Jupiter and RugCheck, showed about 6,000 holders and roughly 96,000 swaps in 24 hours on the main pool. Mint and freeze authorities were listed as revoked, which removes two classic rug tricks. The top 10 holders held about 16.2%, and about 40% of LP was shown as locked or burned.

That sounds tidy, but read it carefully. Liquidity of about $76,000 against nearly $5 million in daily volume means the same dollars are churning over and over. Thin pools move violently in both directions. A few large sells can erase a big chunk of the price in minutes.

Volume about 65 times liquidity: that is a casino floor, not a market with depth.

There is also the copycat problem. DexScreener lists other tokens using the same name on Ethereum and Robinhood Chain, created hours after the Solana one. They are separate contracts with separate holders. Buying the wrong one is an easy mistake when everything has the same ticker.

Why food memes keep working

Pop culture moments are a reliable launchpad for memecoins. A trailer, a celebrity post or a menu change gives everyone the same joke at the same time, and pump.fun makes it trivial to mint a token around it within minutes. We saw the same pattern when a fictional coin in a game trailer spawned a real one, covered in our Dacity coin GTA 6 trailer story.

Most of these tokens fade once the joke gets old. Our memecoin lifecycle study piece walks through how quickly that tends to happen. The McRib Indicator has a built-in calendar, since the sandwich is literally a limited-time item, which may help or hurt the meme.

What to do as a reader

First, if you are even looking at the McRib Indicator, verify the exact contract. The Solana one in this story ends in "pump" and is listed on DexScreener. Copycats on other chains use the same name.

Second, look at liquidity before price. With only tens of thousands of dollars in the pool, slippage can be brutal, and getting out can cost more than getting in.

Third, remember that McDonald's has nothing to do with this token. There is no team, product or promise attached, just a joke with a chart. Nothing here is investment advice. If you ape, ape with lunch money you are fine losing, not rent. Wen McRib? October 27. Wen moon? Nobody knows.
