GPT Terra release odds: Polymarket Bets on a New Terra by December
GPT Terra release odds: after GPT-6.1 Terra surfaced in Microsoft code, Polymarket gives only about 17% to no new Terra model by Dec 27, in a very thin market.
Early story. Some claims here are not officially confirmed yet. We update this post as it confirms.

- TestingCatalog reported on October 20 that "GPT-6.1 Terra" appeared in a Microsoft pull request, with 18 evaluation configs switched from GPT-5.6 Terra.
- The Information reported a new Terra model is expected to beat GPT-6.1 Sol while costing less, though its reporter later said some launches could slip to November.
- OpenAI has not announced any new Terra model; GPT-5.6 Terra is still the Terra listed in its API docs.
GPT Terra release odds are live on Polymarket after a new Terra model name surfaced in Microsoft code and a report said OpenAI plans a cheaper model that beats its current flagship. As of 06:06 UTC on October 23, traders put about 17% on no new Terra model (5.7 or higher) by December 27, which implies they see a release this year as likely, just not this week.
What actually happened
OpenAI's GPT lineup uses tiers: Sol is the flagship, Terra is the balanced middle, and Luna is the cheap fast option. OpenAI's developer docs describe GPT-5.6 Terra as a model that "balances intelligence and cost," roughly matching the old mini tier, with a 1.05 million token context window and current list pricing of $2 per million input tokens and $12 per million output.
On October 19, the account LuminaBench posted that GPT-6.1 Terra showed up in a Microsoft pull request, where 18 evaluation configs were renamed from GPT-5.6 Terra to the new name. TestingCatalog wrote that config changes like that usually happen when a team is preparing to test against a model, not months ahead.
The same day, The Information's Stephanie Palazzolo said October should be busy for model releases, pointing to a new Anthropic model, Google's Gemini 4 Carbon and "a potential new Terra model from OpenAI." TestingCatalog adds that the report says the new Terra should beat GPT-6.1 Sol while costing less. Palazzolo later clarified that some launches might slip into November.
What Polymarket thinks
Polymarket opened two Terra markets on October 22. In the weekly-bucket version, "When will the next GPT Terra model (5.7+) be released?", our 06:06 UTC snapshot showed:
- Before October 26: about 2.5%, with a wide spread (bid under 1 cent, ask about 5)
- October 26 to November 1: about 12.5%
- November 16 to 22: about 18.5%
- November 30 to December 6: about 15.5%
- No release by December 27: about 16.5% (bid 16, ask 17)
Earlier that morning, the before-October-26 bucket was quoted far higher on an even wider spread, which shows how thin this market is. The question we track is "Will there be no next GPT Terra model (5.7+) release by December 27, 2026?" at roughly 17% Yes. Flip it around and the market leans toward a new Terra shipping by late December.
Be careful with precision. That event had traded only about $2,250 at snapshot time, and the bucket prices add up to more than 100% because spreads are wide. The GPT Terra release odds are better read as a rough mood than a sharp forecast.
A qualifying model needs "GPT" and "Terra" in the name and version 5.7 or higher. GPT-6.1 Terra would count. Another GPT-5.6 variant would not.
How to read the leak
A renamed config in a partner's repo is a real signal, but it is not a launch date. Companies test models for weeks before shipping, and some never ship under the name seen in code. The Information's report is paywalled, so most of what is public comes through social posts and TestingCatalog's summary.
The market rules also matter. Polymarket requires public access, including open beta or open waitlist. Closed betas, private access, fine-tunes or modes of an existing model do not count. Placeholder names on a website without a usable model do not count either.

What to do as a reader
First, check the live Polymarket Terra market and its rules before trusting any number. Thin markets can jump on a single tweet.
Second, if you build on OpenAI's API, nothing changes today. GPT-5.6 Terra is what you can call right now. If a new Terra lands cheaper and stronger, re-run your own evals before switching.
Third, the GPT Terra release odds are a fun way to track leaks, but they are not a promise from OpenAI. Nothing here is investment advice. Watch OpenAI's changelog and model docs, because that is where an actual launch will show up first.
