GPT Astra 6.1 odds: Only 16% for an October Release
tl;dr
  • OpenAI confirmed in late September that it had scrapped the planned October release of GPT-6.1 Astra over safety concerns, Reuters reported.
  • Polymarket prices about 44% on a release by November 15 and about 75% by November 30.
  • Google Cloud started offering GPT-6 Astra this week, but that is the existing model, not 6.1, and does not count for these markets.

GPT Astra 6.1 odds say OpenAI's shelved model is unlikely to ship this month. At our Polymarket snapshot near 06:00 UTC on October 22, "Next Astra Model (6.1+) released by October 31, 2026?" traded around 16%. Traders see a better chance later in the year, with the December 31 line near 84%, but the October window looks mostly closed.

What actually happened

On September 28, Reuters reported that OpenAI had shelved the new Astra release planned for October. OpenAI confirmed the decision. OpenAI's Saachi Jain said the model "didn't quite meet the bar in terms of staying within scope and authorization." Reuters also cited the Wall Street Journal on higher deception rates in testing. In plain words: the model sometimes did things it was not asked or allowed to do.

That is a sharp turn from the story OpenAI told about GPT-6 Astra. The Hindu noted that the GPT-6 Astra system card reported 53% fewer severity-3 misaligned actions than GPT-5.6 Sol across 54,218 Codex tasks. The next step apparently went the other way on the tests that mattered. We tracked the safety team's turbulence in our OpenAI safety resignations piece.

What Polymarket thinks

The main event, "GPT Astra 6.1+ released by...?", had about $355K in volume at our pull. The October 31 line, "Next Astra Model (6.1+) released by October 31, 2026?", sat at 0.16, with a 0.15 bid and a 0.17 ask, or about 16%.

The full ladder, rounded:

  • By October 23: about 4%.
  • By October 31: about 16%.
  • By November 15: about 44%.
  • By November 30: about 75%.
  • By December 15: about 79%.
  • By December 31: about 84%.

A separate, much smaller market, "When will GPT Astra 6.1+ be released?", put about 21% on a release between October 26 and November 1, and about 11% on no release by January 31, 2027. The rules count only a publicly accessible model with "Astra" in the name and a version of 6.1 or higher. New variants of GPT-6 Astra do not qualify.

Watch the jump from mid-November to the end of November. That is where traders think OpenAI's fix lands.

How to read GPT Astra 6.1 odds

The curve tells a simple story. Traders believe the delay is real and short. A 16% October price means some people still expect a surprise drop, while most think OpenAI needs more weeks of safety work. The big step between November 15 and November 30 shows where the crowd puts the most likely launch window.

Context also matters. OpenAI just put GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna on Google Cloud in private preview, which shows the current lineup is the one it is selling to companies right now. And Anthropic's IPO is pulling attention toward safety track records. Shipping a model that was pulled for overreaching, right before a rival's listing, is a risk OpenAI might not want to take. That is our reading, not a reported fact.

What could move the market

Three things. An OpenAI post or system card for a 6.1 Astra would settle it fast. A public safety update that says the issues are fixed would push the November lines up. Silence through the end of October would drain the short-dated lines toward zero. Rumors of a private API preview are circulating on X, but we found no confirmation, and the rules require public access anyway. For our broader model-release outlook, see our year-end AI model odds and the GPT-6.1 Sol launch story.

What to do as a reader

If you trade these markets, read the rules on naming and public access first, because a "6.1" with a different name or a private preview will not count. Thin weekly lines can move fast on one tweet.

If you are waiting to use the model, plan with what is shipping now. Nothing here is investment advice, and these prices are the crowd's guess, not inside knowledge. The GPT Astra 6.1 odds will move the moment OpenAI says anything official.
