CoreWeave bankruptcy odds on Polymarket are far calmer than the bond market. At about 06:10 UTC on October 21, traders priced a CoreWeave bankruptcy announcement by the end of 2027 at roughly 10.5%. Meanwhile, the AI cloud company's five-year credit default swaps sat near 1,082 basis points, a level CNBC calls a sign of distress.
What actually happened
CoreWeave led last week's AI sell-off. CNBC's Investing Club reported the stock fell nearly 12% on Friday, October 16, and lost about a quarter of its value over the week. A 2031 bond issued in April at a 9.75% yield came close to 16% at one point. Five-year CDS crossed 1,000 basis points, up 178% from a year earlier.
Monday, October 19, brought a stock rebound for most AI names, but not for CoreWeave. CNBC said the neocloud hit a 52-week low intraday and closed slightly down, while its CDS eased only about 2% to roughly 1,082 basis points. Oracle's five-year CDS widened to 315 basis points, up 311% in a year, which shows the stress is not only one company.
The bull and bear voices
Not everyone is selling. John Lloyd, a credit head at Janus Henderson whose fund owns CoreWeave 2031 bonds, told CNBC the company was "a little bit of the poster child" for refinancing risk but that he still likes the bonds and thinks the moves are overdone. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said on October 15 that CoreWeave's finances are stable and "improving every day," and that Nvidia does not need to backstop it.
The bear case is simple: CoreWeave "need[s] the debt markets in order to grow," in Lloyd's words. With the 10-year Treasury yield near 5.1%, per CNBC, refinancing costs are high. Economist David Rosenberg called Oracle the "canary in the coal mine" for AI credit.
What Polymarket thinks
Polymarket's "CoreWeave announces bankruptcy by...?" market resolves Yes if CoreWeave officially announces it will file, or has filed, for bankruptcy of any variety by the listed date. An announcement alone counts, and so does a definitive consensus of credible reporting.
At about 06:10 UTC on October 21, the CoreWeave bankruptcy odds were 0.105 for 2027 on about $109K of volume, 0.145 for 2028 and 0.245 for 2029 (bid 0.24 / ask 0.25). In plain terms, the crowd puts about one in four on a filing before 2030.
The ladder shape matters too. CoreWeave bankruptcy odds rise steadily with time rather than spiking for the nearest date, which suggests traders see slow refinancing pressure, not an imminent cash crunch.
Why CDS and Polymarket disagree
A 60% "implied" default probability from CDS is not the same thing as a forecast. CDS prices include a premium for fear and for tying up capital, and they cover credit events that may not mean a full bankruptcy. Prediction markets trade real-money bets on one specific event, but they are thin: this whole event has under $300K in volume.
Both numbers say the same thing in different volumes. Lenders think CoreWeave is risky. Bettors think an actual collapse in the next 14 months is unlikely. We covered a similar split in our Anthropic bankruptcy odds piece and in the Anthropic Q3 financials breakdown, since frontier labs are major cloud customers.
What to do as a reader
Watch the bonds, not the hype. CNBC's Investing Club makes the point that CDS moves are a real-time proxy for perceived risk. If CoreWeave's spreads keep widening while the stock bounces, the credit market is not buying the rally. If they tighten, Polymarket's long-dated odds will likely drift down too.
Read the rules carefully: any bankruptcy announcement counts, including a restructuring filing. Macro matters as well, as our US recession 2026 odds coverage shows. Nothing here is investment advice, and distressed credit can swing violently both ways.
