Anthropic bankruptcy odds sound like a troll market, but real money is on it. At about 06:11 UTC on October 20, Polymarket priced "Anthropic announces bankruptcy by December 31, 2027" at roughly 9.5%, on about $1.66M of volume for that date alone. The same company just told investors it made $16.8B in revenue last quarter and is preparing to go public.

What actually happened

The bankruptcy market went live in mid-September and quietly built volume. In the last 24 hours to about 05:57 UTC on Tuesday, roughly $228K changed hands across the three dates. That is a lot of trading for an outcome that the headline numbers make look extremely unlikely.

Those headline numbers are strong. At a closed investor meeting on October 14, Anthropic said third-quarter revenue hit $16.8B, according to Bloomberg, the FT and Reuters. It reported positive adjusted profit and free cash flow. These figures came from a presentation, not audited public filings, so "adjusted" is doing some work. Still, this is not what a company on the edge of bankruptcy usually looks like.

We covered that meeting in our Anthropic Q3 financials piece, and the IPO timing debate in Anthropic IPO Polymarket December.

Why would anyone pay 9.5 cents for this?

A few reasons, and only one of them is about Anthropic itself.

First, long-dated prediction markets have a built-in bias. If you buy "No" at about 90.5 cents today, you lock up money until the end of 2027 for about a 10% return. That is not a great yield for capital tied up that long, so few people bother to push the Yes price lower. The price partly reflects the cost of money and time, not a pure probability.

Second, tail risk is real in AI. Training frontier models costs enormous amounts, competition is brutal and the industry could see a sharp correction. The usual bear case is that multi-year compute commitments are huge and fixed, while demand and pricing for AI models can change quickly.

Third, the rules are loose. The market resolves Yes if Anthropic announces it will file or has filed for bankruptcy "of any variety" through official channels, or if a consensus of credible reporting says so. Restructuring of a subsidiary could get argued over. Fine print like that keeps a few cents of value on the Yes side.

What Polymarket thinks

At about 06:11 UTC on October 20, the December 31, 2027 rung traded at 0.095, with a bid of 0.09 and an ask of 0.10. The December 31, 2028 rung was at 0.165 (bid 0.16, ask 0.17), and December 31, 2029 was at 0.235 (bid 0.23, ask 0.24). Event volume was about $2.07M.

The ladder rises steadily with time, which is what you would expect if traders see a small but growing chance of a bust each year. Put next to the 77.5% IPO odds, the picture is clear: the market expects Anthropic to list, not collapse, and is pricing the Anthropic bankruptcy odds as a long-shot hedge.

Bankruptcy at 9.5%, IPO at 77.5%. Polymarket is basically saying "probably moon, but maybe crater."

What would move the price

Up: a sharp revenue miss in the IPO filing, a failed or delayed listing, a big lawsuit loss, or a broader AI market crash. Any sign that compute commitments outrun revenue would also push the long-dated rungs higher.

Down: a successful IPO with audited numbers that confirm the profit story. Once public, a company has more ways to raise money, which usually makes a bankruptcy announcement much less likely in the short run. That would likely compress the Anthropic bankruptcy odds over time.

What to do as a reader

Do not read a 9.5% price as "one in ten chance Anthropic dies." Long-dated markets include time value, thin interest on the No side and wide rules. Compare it with the IPO market and the company's reported financials before drawing conclusions.

If you build on Claude, this is not a reason to panic, but it is a reminder to avoid depending on a single provider for anything critical. Nothing here is investment advice.
