SoFi Earn SOFIE: Bank Token Pays 4.40% on Idle Crypto Cash
SoFi Earn SOFIE is a tokenized deposit paying a variable 4.40% APY with FDIC insurance, convertible 1:1 to the SoFiUSD stablecoin to buy crypto or move money 24/7.

- SOFIE is a deposit, not a stablecoin, which is how it can pay interest while stablecoin issuers cannot.
- Members can swap SOFIE 1:1 for SoFiUSD, then buy crypto in the SoFi app or send funds to supported external wallets 24/7.
- SoFi calls it the company's fifth new crypto product in less than a year.

SoFi Earn SOFIE is a new tokenized bank deposit that pays a variable 4.40% APY on cash parked for crypto, and SoFi says it is the first of its kind from a US national bank for consumers. Launched on October 22, each SOFIE represents $1 on deposit at SoFi Bank, is FDIC-insured up to the usual limits, and converts 1:1 into the SoFiUSD stablecoin when you want to buy crypto or move money on-chain.
What actually happened
SoFi Technologies announced SoFi Earn on Thursday. The pitch is aimed squarely at idle crypto cash. "Too much money in the digital asset ecosystem is sitting idle, leaving massive potential earnings on the table for millions of people," CEO Anthony Noto said in the company's release, and he repeated the line to Reuters.
According to SoFi, each SOFIE token is backed by $1 held as a deposit at SoFi Bank, N.A. The 4.40% APY is variable, can change at any time, and was set as of October 20, with no minimum balance. Reuters noted it corrected its own story after SoFi revised the rate from 4.2% to 4.4%.
The flow works like this. You hold SOFIE inside your SoFi Crypto account and earn interest. When you want to act, you convert SOFIE to SoFiUSD at 1:1, then use SoFiUSD to buy one of the 40-plus cryptocurrencies SoFi offers or send it to an outside wallet over blockchain rails.
Why SoFi Earn SOFIE can pay interest
This is the clever regulatory bit. Reuters explains that the GENIUS Act, signed last year, bars stablecoin issuers from paying interest to holders. That pushed a lot of yield-hungry crypto cash toward other setups. Banks have argued that tokenized deposits, which are legally bank deposits, can offer interest with bank-style protections.
SoFi's own disclosure is explicit: "SOFIE is not a payment stablecoin." It is a deposit liability of SoFi Bank, eligible for FDIC insurance up to $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. SoFiUSD, the stablecoin SoFi launched in December 2025, is the part that moves on-chain.
SoFi Earn SOFIE slots into a fast build-out. SoFi says it launched consumer crypto trading in November 2025, SoFiUSD a month later, and business banking for fiat and digital assets earlier in 2026. It also cites Fed research estimating about $64 billion, or 21.2% of the stablecoin market, sitting in rarely used or forgotten wallets.
Interest lives in the deposit. Speed lives in the stablecoin. SOFIE bridges the two with a 1:1 swap.
The bigger trend
Reuters frames this as banks moving into ground long held by crypto-native firms. In September, a group of 21 financial institutions, including Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Citi and Deutsche Bank, said they plan to set up a company to issue a dollar-pegged token in the first half of 2027. Spark CEO Sam MacPherson told Reuters he expects "an inflection point" over the next year or so.
For crypto users, that means more choice. People who parked trading cash in interest-bearing setups now have a regulated option from a bank many already use for checking or loans. Whether they switch will depend on rates, convenience and how much they value insurance over on-chain freedom.

What to do as a reader
First, read the fine print on the SoFi announcement. The APY is variable, fees may reduce earnings, and only SOFIE carries FDIC eligibility. SoFi's own disclosure says other digital assets on its platform are not insured and may lose value.
Second, understand what you give up. A bank deposit inside one app is not the same as self-custodied stablecoins you control. Converting to SoFiUSD and withdrawing is the step that puts funds on-chain.
Third, compare. SoFi Earn SOFIE is one option for idle cash, not a magic yield, and rates can drop. Nothing here is investment advice, and no product here promises income. Gm to banks learning to speak crypto, but keep your own math.
