Singapore Grand Prix odds now have a clear favorite, and it's Max Verstappen. The Red Bull driver grabbed pole for Saturday's Sprint at Marina Bay, survived a stewards' look at a yellow-flag incident, and Polymarket traders pushed him to roughly 44% to win Sunday's race. Meanwhile, George Russell is heading to the back of the Grand Prix grid with an engine penalty.

What actually happened

According to the FIA report, Verstappen's single SQ3 attempt was decisive. A strong opening sector put him clear, and he held the gap to the line for a 1:31.156. Russell's late 1:31.276 split Verstappen and Leclerc, who ended 0.243 seconds back.

Oscar Piastri was fourth, just 0.055 behind Leclerc, ahead of Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton. Antonelli, who leads the championship, was seventh, 0.693 seconds off the pace. Liam Lawson took eighth, and Isack Hadjar and Pierre Gasly rounded out the top 10 after their SQ3 laps were deleted.

The session wasn't clean. Sergio Pérez clipped the barriers in SQ1 and left debris, bringing out a red flag with six minutes left. Replays showed Verstappen appearing to pass a Ferrari under yellow flags. Formula 1 reported the stewards let him keep pole, calling it an "unfortunate consequence" of the cars' differing closing speeds.

After the restart, Verstappen set the fastest SQ1 time, a 1:33.477, just 0.018 ahead of Leclerc. At the other end, Arvid Lindblad missed the cut in 17th, followed by Lance Stroll, Alexander Albon, Pérez, Valtteri Bottas and Carlos Sainz, who was last in the second Williams.

Russell's penalty changes the math

Formula 1 reports Russell has to take new power unit components after his late retirement at the previous round. The penalty is at least 10 places depending on which parts are swapped, and any penalty over 15 places sends a driver to the back anyway, so he starts the Grand Prix from the rear.

"All-out attack; just trying to enjoy the weekend."

That's Russell's plan. He also said Singapore would be "probably the second bottom of the list after Monaco" if he could choose where to take a penalty. Mercedes is splitting strategy too, with Antonelli running the latest upgrades and Russell going back to the package he used to win in Azerbaijan. Russell sits 84 points behind his teammate in the standings.

What Polymarket thinks

The winner market resolves on the driver listed first in the FIA's final classification. At 06:00 UTC on October 10, Verstappen traded near 44% (bid 43, ask 45). Leclerc and Antonelli were both near 12.5%, though Antonelli had dropped about 10 points in a day. Hamilton sat near 9.5%, Norris near 9%, Piastri near 3.35% and Russell near 3%.

The event has traded about $144,000, most of it in the last 24 hours. A separate market for Grand Prix pole had Verstappen near 46.5% and Leclerc near 14.5%. Note that Sprint pole is not Grand Prix pole; that's decided in Saturday's main qualifying.

These Singapore Grand Prix odds were captured before the Sprint and main qualifying, so expect big moves once those sessions finish.

How to read the favorite

At 44%, the market thinks Verstappen is more likely than any single rival to win, but still more likely to lose than win against the field. Street circuits punish mistakes, safety cars can scramble strategy, and one-lap pace on Friday doesn't guarantee Sunday race pace.

Ferrari looked quick, with Leclerc topping SQ2 at 1:32.246 in the official results. McLaren had both cars in the top five. Antonelli has the most to gain if Russell's penalty and his own updates line up, which explains why traders haven't written him off.

What to do as a reader

Check Singapore Grand Prix odds again after main qualifying, since grid position matters a lot on this track. Compare the winner and pole markets: if pole odds and win odds diverge, the market is telling you something about expected race pace.
