Early story. Some claims here are not officially confirmed yet. We update this post as it confirms.

Genius airdrop refund: Take Your Fees Back or Lock for 24 Months
tl;dr
  • Season 2 ended with 173 million GP distributed, equal to 6.055% of total GENIUS supply, versus 200 million planned; the unallocated 0.945% gets burned.
  • A refund returns all fees paid to Genius during the season, forfeits Season 2 GP, and the matching GENIUS is burned.
  • Users who stay get a second five-day window from October 12: unlock immediately with an 85% deduction, or lock for 24 months to receive 100%.

The Genius airdrop refund window is the weirdest airdrop choice of the week, and it opens soon. Genius, the trading terminal backed by YZi Labs, closed its Season 2 campaign and is giving users a real option: take back every fee you paid during the season and forfeit your points, or keep your allocation and pick an unlock path.

What actually happened

Genius announced the end of Season 2 on its official X account on October 3, as quoted by CoinMarketCal and TradingView. TechFlow and Lookonchain covered the details the same weekend. The headline numbers match across sources: 200 million GP were planned, about 173 million were actually distributed, and that equals 6.055% of the total GENIUS supply.

The leftover 0.945% of supply, the part that was planned but never allocated, will be burned automatically, according to Lookonchain. So Season 2 ended smaller than its original budget.

Then comes the twist. Instead of the usual "claim and dump" airdrop, Genius is offering a refund. If you request it, you get back all the fees you paid to Genius during Season 2. In exchange, you give up your Season 2 GP, and the GENIUS tokens tied to those points are permanently burned.

Rare W: an airdrop that lets you ask for your money back.

The timeline, with time zones

The refund window is where the details matter. TechFlow lists it as opening at 11:00 EDT on October 6 and closing at 11:00 EDT on October 11. Lookonchain lists it as 00:00 Beijing time on October 7 through 00:00 Beijing time on October 12.

Those are close but not identical. 11:00 EDT is 23:00 in Beijing, so the two descriptions are about an hour apart. We are not picking one. If you plan to use the Genius airdrop refund, go by the time shown in the official Genius interface and don't leave it to the last hour.

After that, the second five-day window starts October 12. CoinMarketCal lists it as October 12 to October 17. In that window, users who did not refund choose between two paths: unlock right away with what Lookonchain describes as an 85% deduction of their allocated share, or lock tokens for 24 months to receive the full 100% airdrop.

How to think about the choice

This is basically a cost-versus-belief decision. If the fees you paid during the season are worth more to you than your expected airdrop, the Genius airdrop refund is the clean exit. You get your fees back and walk away with no GENIUS exposure.

If you believe in the project long term, the 24-month lock gives you the full allocation, but your tokens are frozen for two years. That is a long time in crypto. Projects can thrive, pivot or fade in that window.

The immediate unlock with the 85% deduction is the impatience tax. You get tokens now, but much less than your full allocation. It mostly makes sense for people who put a high value on liquidity today.

We have seen other creative airdrop structures recently, like the points system in Kinetiq kPoints and the claim mechanics in Tessa airdrop. Genius is going further by putting a refund on the menu.

Why the burn matters

Every refund burns the matching GENIUS. If many users take the refund, a meaningful chunk of the Season 2 allocation disappears, which reduces future supply. If few do, the burn is small. The final refund rate will tell you how users actually feel about the token.

Combined with the automatic burn of the unallocated 0.945%, Season 2 could end up putting fewer tokens into circulation than the original plan suggested. That is the bullish read. The bearish read is that a large refund rate would mean many users valued their fees more than the token.

What to do as a reader

Check your Season 2 dashboard on Genius's official site to see how much you paid in fees and how many GP you earned. Do the math before the window opens.

Only use links from Genius's official X account or website. Refund windows are perfect bait for phishing, and "claim your refund here" DMs are a classic scam. No legit refund ever needs your seed phrase.

Not investment advice. Pick the path that fits your own risk tolerance and timeline. If you are unsure, reread the official terms before the window closes instead of deciding off a tweet. Stay safe, degens.

Not financial advice. DYOR, ser.
