Brazil runoff odds: Flávio Bolsonaro Jumps to 83% After Round One

Brazil runoff odds: Flávio Bolsonaro Jumps to 83% After Round One
tl;dr
  • Agência Senado's count at 99.97% of polls reported has Flávio Bolsonaro (PL) at 47.04% and Lula (PT) at 45.15%, with the runoff set for October 25.
  • On Polymarket's main "Brazil Presidential Election" market, Flávio was at about 83% and Lula about 18% on Monday morning.
  • Before the polls closed, the same race was priced far tighter, so the first-round surprise did most of the work.

Brazil runoff odds flipped hard overnight. Flávio Bolsonaro finished first in Sunday's presidential vote with about 47% to Lula's roughly 45%, neither cleared 50%, and the two now meet again on October 25. Polymarket traders responded by pricing Flávio as a heavy favorite.

What actually happened

Brazil voted on Sunday, October 4. According to Agência Senado, the Senate's official news agency, Flávio Bolsonaro took 56,098,457 votes (47.04%) and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva took 53,846,396 (45.15%) with 99.97% of polling stations counted. Turnout was 78.92%.

Further down the field, the same report lists Augusto Cury at 2.89%, Renan Santos at roughly 2.2% and Ronaldo Caiado at 2.18%. Il Sole 24 Ore notes the other right-leaning candidates together took more than 6%. That is the pool both campaigns will now fish in.

Flávio is 45 and a senator from Rio de Janeiro, with Alfredo Gaspar as his running mate. Lula is 80 and running again with Geraldo Alckmin. Il Sole 24 Ore reports that Flávio called the result the beginning of "the end of the PT era," while Lula told supporters he is "very good at run-offs." Both lines are going straight into campaign ads, ser. The next three weeks will be all about who can grow beyond the base that showed up on Sunday.

There is a family subplot too. Il Sole 24 Ore reports that Jair Bolsonaro, Flávio's father, is serving a 27-year sentence under house arrest. Flávio inherits the brand without the candidate.

What Polymarket thinks

The main market is Brazil Presidential Election on Polymarket. When we checked it on Monday morning, Flávio Bolsonaro was trading at 82.7% (Buy Yes at 83.1¢) and Lula at 18%. Volume on the event was about $170.9 million, which makes it one of the fattest election books on the platform right now.

For context, PolymarketFlow's snapshot from October 4, before results came in, had Flávio at 62% and Lula at 38%. So Brazil runoff odds moved roughly 20 points in a single night. That is the market reacting to an actual count, not to vibes alone. PolyWatch also flagged more than $80 million in first-round contracts heading toward resolution, which means a lot of degens just got paid or rekt and are now rolling into the second round.

A few honest caveats about Brazil runoff odds. Polymarket prices are crowd bets, not polls. Runoffs reset the game: the first round splits votes across many candidates, while the second round forces everyone to pick one of two. Lula has won runoffs before, which is exactly why his quote landed. An 83% favorite still loses about one time in six by the market's own math.

Small numbers, big arguments

Different outlets published slightly different first-round percentages because they captured the count at different moments. Agência Senado's text says 47.04% vs 45.15%, while the results table on the same page shows 47.05% vs 45.14%. Il Sole 24 Ore's headline uses 47.14% vs 45.03%, and its body uses 47.03% vs 45.16% at more than 99% counted.

None of those gaps changes the story: Flávio leads by roughly two points and about 2.2 to 2.5 million votes, depending on the snapshot. Just don't mash the numbers into one fake "average." Quote the source and the time of the snapshot.

First round is the trailer. October 25 is the movie.

What to do as a reader

If you follow Brazil runoff odds, watch three things over the next three weeks: endorsements from the eliminated candidates, the turnout story in the Northeast and the big cities, and any legal headlines around the Bolsonaro family. Each one can move the book. Also keep an eye on how quickly the electoral authority finalizes the last fraction of a percent, since some contracts and headlines will cite the final official numbers rather than Sunday night's snapshot.

Read the resolution rules on the Polymarket page before you treat any price as meaningful. Check which outcome a contract settles on and what source the market uses. Prices on big election markets can swing on a single debate clip.

This is not betting or investment advice. Prediction markets are a speculative tool, regulations differ by country and some people simply should not use them. If you just want the signal, open the market page, note the price and the volume, and compare it with real polling when it lands. Stay curious, not reckless.
