Alberta independence odds are about as lopsided as political markets get. With Albertans voting on October 19, Polymarket gives a pass on independence roughly a 2% chance, and the freshest big poll points the same way. The interesting trade now is not who wins but by how much.

What actually happened

On October 19, Albertans vote in a set of ten referendum questions, and one of them is about independence, asked in a roundabout way. Per Wikipedia's summary, the ballot asks whether Alberta should remain a province of Canada, or whether the provincial government should start the legal process under the Canadian Constitution to hold a binding referendum on separating.

So even a win for the separation side would not mean Alberta leaves. It would mean the government begins the legal process toward a second, binding vote.

The road here was messy. After Thomas Lukaszuk's petition drive began, the Smith government passed an amendment in May 2025 that greatly lowered the threshold for a citizen petition to trigger a referendum. A separatist petition was struck down by the Court of King's Bench on May 13, 2026, over a failure to consult Indigenous peoples. It was later verified with almost 223,000 signatures in case an appeal succeeded.

What the polls say

Léger's October report is the freshest big number. Support for remaining rose five points since August to 70%. Among remain voters, 91% rate their certainty at 8 to 10 out of 10, versus 71% on the separation side. Engagement is up too: 77% rate their likelihood of voting at 8 to 10, up from 68% in August.

The split is partisan. Léger found 98% of NDP voters back remaining, while UCP voters are divided, 43% remain against 48% for starting the separation process. Separatism has also jumped up the list of concerns, tied with health care at 16% as the top issue.

One caution: Léger used a non-probability online panel, so no true margin of error applies. For comparison, it says a probability sample of that size would carry about plus or minus 3.1 points.

What Polymarket thinks

The main Polymarket market resolves Yes if a referendum establishing Alberta's desire for independence, setting a framework for it, or establishing it passes by December 31, 2026. At 06:09 UTC on October 12 (09:09 MSK), Yes traded near 2.2% (bid 1.9, ask 2.5), down about 2.7 points over the past week. The page rounds that to 2%.

The side market is more fun. In "Alberta Independence Referendum: Margin of Victory," the Remain 40 to 60 point bucket led near 49.5%, with Remain 60 to 80 near 23.5% and Remain 20 to 40 near 18.5%. "Leave wins" sat near 2%. That market is thin, with about $11,900 in total volume, so prices can jump on small orders.

The crowd isn't asking whether Remain wins. It's asking whether the gap is a blowout or a landslide.

A 70 to 22 poll split is a 48-point gap, which is why the 40 to 60 bucket leads. If undecideds break toward remain, the margin could stretch toward the top of that range, and the 60 to 80 bucket has been gaining. Turnout is the swing factor: Léger found 92% of Albertans aged 55 and older rate their likelihood of voting at 8 to 10, while UCP voters, the only split group, come in at 78% against 93% for NDP voters.

That is why Alberta independence odds barely move on new polls. The market already priced a comfortable Remain win; fresh numbers only nudge the margin buckets.

What to do as a reader

If you trade Alberta independence odds, read the resolution rules first. The main market's wording covers any referendum that "establishes Alberta's desire for independence," while the actual ballot question only asks about starting a legal process, so a surprise Yes vote could trigger a resolution debate. Treat that as a risk, not a free edge.

Ignore "final results" pages that show up before October 19. Use Elections Alberta and established outlets on the night, and note that the main market lists an end date of October 20 (UTC).
